It's harder still when your mother is ceramicist Celia Allen and your father is Mike Dodd, one of the most acclaimed potters of his generation. Expectations are high and comparisons inevitable. Wisely, Ben has taken his time before opening this web shop. He has spent many years honing his craft, exhibiting at ceramic fairs and, more recently, teaching. This new platform shows us that he now feels ready for his work to be seen on a wider stage. At first sight there are superficial similarities with Mike's pots because he shares his father's commitment to the Leach/Hamada tradition and his sensuous use of glazes, but Ben has successfully avoided the trap of producing mere copies. The pots on display are determinedly his own. Are they good? Mike himself is probably the best person to answer that. When he saw the results of a recent firing he was in no doubt: "I wish I had made those".
